Zury Mayte Ríos-Montt Sosa de Weller, deputy to Congress, was born in Guatemala in January 1968 and is the daughter of General Jose Efraín Ríos-Montt and Mrs María Teresa Sosa Avila de Ríos-Montt. She has two brothers, Enrique and Homero.  On November 20th, 2004, Zury Ríos-Montt wed United States Congressman Jerry Weller Reinlasoder, Representative of the 11th District of Illinois, of the Republican Party.  

Zury Mayte Ríos-Montt de Weller is Licentiate in Political and Social Sciences, graduated from Francisco Marroquín University, and she holds a Professorship in Literature. From an early age, her vocation has been in education. She is now in her third term as Deputy to the Congress of the Republic, well known for her work in favor of education and the protection of the human rights of persons living with HIV-AIDS.

She is also internationally known for her work in the spheres of international policy, parliamentary diplomacy as a member of the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and for her special commitment in the area of sexual and reproductive health.

It is also important to mention the work she is doing in the Congress to have amendments to the Health Code approved, in order to prohibit smoking, as well as to regulate the advertising of alcoholic beverages, tobacco and their derivatives.

Guatemala is one the few countries in Central America to have such strong legislation regulating the advertising of these products. Mrs Ríos-Montt de Weller supports social projects for the benefit of the elderly population as well as handicapped persons.

On August 17th, 2006, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter Marizú Catherine Weller Ríos.
